Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme vetting update
The Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG Scheme) helps to ensure that people who have regular contact with vulnerable groups in Scotland through work don’t have a known history of harmful or abusive behaviour.
The Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007 (“The PVG Scheme”) replaced the old disclosure checking and has been live since February 2011. This Law applies to organisations and groups across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors that provide services and activities for children, young people and/or protected adults. This includes Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport (SGBs) and other sports organisations. It is an offence for an organisation to employ an individual in regulated work if that person is barred.
The RCCC joined as an organisation and started PVG vetting in 2010. Initially we were only allowed to submit new or up skilling coaches. We have since been authorised and notified to begin retrospective checking at the start of this 2013/2014 season. This is for coaches who are active and current in their role e.g. an Assistant coach who qualified prior to 2010. It should be noted that were have a monthly limit of how many applications we can submit and it is expected to take three years to complete the retrospective checks.
There are two types of application forms. Existing member update application form is for those who have already joined the scheme with a different organisation and an Application to join the PVG scheme, is for those not already on it.
Curling Coaches and Rink Child Protection Officers will need to join the PVG scheme through the RCCC. Additionally an RCCC member, volunteering regularly in a recognised role as a Coaches Helper, may also request to join the PVG scheme through the RCCC.
There is no charge directly to the RCCC volunteer – The RCCC will apply for government funding to pay for this vetting process.
