Aberlour’s Andy Cameron continued his top form this week with an uncomplicated win against Gordon Fraser to maintain his 100% League record.Fraser’s Fochabers four have had a slow start to the season and packaging them together with Donald Ross’s Sunninghill rink as far as League Division 1 is concerned, puts one in mind of that well known BBC teatime quiz show, Pointless.
A count of 4 in the third end gave Cameron a healthy 5-1 lead and a further 6 shots over the last three ends saw him pocket a runaway 11-2 win.
Ross on the other hand might feel a tad unfortunate not to grab at least a point after a nail biting 8-7 loss to Charle Watt jnr. The Forres team appeared to be on easy street at 5-0 ahead after 3 ends, but a count of 4 at the fourth and a seventh end steal saw the teams going into the final end tied at 7-7. Watt’s hammer advantage was enough for the canny Forres skip to nick a single shot and send the hotel team home empty handed once again.
Mike McDonald still tops Division 2 despite a comprehensive defeat in his game against Ben Rankin’s Juniors. The youngsters are clearly benefitting from their weekend sojourns to age group Slam competitions and an opening end score of 4 shots set the tone for an uncomfortable McDonald evening. The Forres team could only score a couple of single shots as Big Ben and his gang racked up a couple of deuces and two more singles to clinch an 11-2 victory.
Dave McPherson and Jim Gault played on consecutive nights, their own Tuesday clash finishing with honours even in a 4-4 peel before both teams had a Wednesday to forget with losses to Mike Watt and Andrew Allardyce respectively.
Mcpherson’s rink are an interesting crew with fourth player ex male model Roy Thomson at the helm and Oxfam clothes shopper Dave MacPherson at first mate. Not many people know that long time second player Colin Anderson was once an extra in Thunderbirds and is in fact, the older brother of Brains, the super intelligent scientist to the International Rescue organisation. Colin’s role was more of a “ minder” ,hence the expression Brains and Brawn. Coincidentally,Brawn happens to be the surname of lead player and managing director Martin Brawn and in truth,he is the man who normally pulls the strings.
Anyway,apologies,I digress.
The Tennis Club lads were 3-1 up after three ends to Mike Watt’s Fochabers rink but then lost a 4 and two single steals to go down 7-3 whilst Gault and co followed a similar trail. 3-3 after three ends against Andrew Allardyce, the Elgin rink won the next 3 ends to lead 7-3 before Gault’s single shot last end counter made it a 7-4 Allardyce win.
In a West Province Preliminary Open Knockout game, it certainly was a win by knockout for Gus Forbes against Nairn clubmate Robbie Asher, the referee stopping the contest after 5 ends with Forbes a 13-1 winner.
