Andy Cameron consolidated his Division 1 lead in the Moray Province East curling league this week with a hard fought win over Donald Ross’s plucky Sunninghill rink. After registering an opening end single, the Speysiders then lost a three but came back strongly to score at each of the next 3 ends to lead 7-3 after 5 . A Ross single and then a 2 shot steal at the last saw the Sunninghill outfit come up agonisingly short of victory but at least give Cameron and co a real fright.
Alan Campbell was skipping for Steve Rankin’s Buckie team who were generally rather outplayed in a somewhat flattering 8-7 loss. Gordon Fraser’s Fochabers rink welcomed back old timer Abby Duncan to their ranks and a fourth end lapse saw an opposition 6 and a 7-3 deficit go up on the board . Scores at all of the last 3 ends, however, gave the Fochabers four a hard earned but probably worthy win.
There was no such excitement in Charlie Watt jnr’s big win against Wilson Burnett. There were shades of “ Dusty Bin” as the scoreboard showed counts of 3,2,1 to the Forres rink in the first 3 ends. Things didn’t really get much better for Burnett despite a token 2 shots at the fifth end and it was more Charlie Hot than Charlie Watt as the Forres skip and his excellent team nailed the next 3 ends for a whopping 13-2 win.
Elgin Tennis Club lead Division 2 after a convincing 12-3 defeat of Andrew Allardyce. Tennis skip Roy Thomson was another in pretty good form as he steered his team to an 8-0 lead after 3 ends, a count of 5 at the third putting an exclamation mark on a match winning start. Allardyce scored at a couple of ends but a Tennis Club 3 at the fifth was more than enough to put Thomson and co out of sight for a solid win.
Not so hard on the Tennis Club’s Division 2 leading heels after this week’s fixtures is Ben Rankin. The Moray Juniors ran into the good form of the experienced Jimmy Gault and although the board showed a tight 3-2 lead to Gault after 5 hard fought ends, the Aberlour rink pulled away with consecutive counts of 3 to bag a 9-2 win.
Mike MacDonald opened with 2 singles in his game against Mike Watt, but that represented his Forres team’s only success as the Fochabers trio wrapped up the remaining 5 ends in what became a runaway 7-2 victory.
