As the daylight lengthens, and the spring bulbs burst through into bloom ,so the curtain begins to close on another curling season. In Moray Province East, the final League positions are now determined in the top two Divisions.
Andy Cameron had already wrapped up the Division 1 title and an 11-7 win over Steve Rankin’s Buckie team capped a successful 10 match campaign in which the Aberlour outfit have dropped just a single point .
Last season’s champions Charlie Watt jnr’s Forres team have had a spectacular fall from grace this year after a 7-4 defeat at the hands of Gordon Fraser whose Fochabers’ rink now join Watt in the drop to Division 2 next term.
Donald Ross’s Sunninghill team moved clear of relegation worries with a win that was a bit tighter than the score might suggest. Stand in skip Georgia Clarke had a night to remember for the hotel team as she constantly foiled the efforts of opponent Wilson Burnett . On keen but fairly straight ice , the game was dominated by draw shots and there were often more stones in play than at a Taliban punishment squad outing. Georgia, who claimed to only have played 3 times this season , repeatedly drew the button to open up a 7-0 lead for the Sunninghill team after 4 ends and although Burnett and co usually had plenty of stones around, the Fochabers team could not convert opportunities into anything more than two single end counts.
In an exclusive interview with a representative of Scottish Curling,it was later revealed that Georgia has in fact been training at altitude 8 days a week with a group of elite curling athletes in a bid to force her way into the Olympic squad.
In Division 2, Hot Shot Moray Juniors had another big winning night. Caught in the crosshairs this time was the unfortunate Andrew Allardyce’s Elgin rink. An opening end 4 for Rankin gave the Juniors a flying start and their feet never left the accelerator, a count of 5 at the sixth end and a 4 shot steal at the last giving them a crushing 16-2 win and promotion to the top Division.
After their hammering , a still shaking Elgin 3rd player Mike Kemp was spotted feverishly fingering through the Yellow Pages in a search for the phone number of the Pensioner abuse support line.
On an altogether bigger stage, the Moray Province West Dalcross team of Blair Fraser, Tom Pendreigh Snr, Mark Fraser,Ross Fraser and Tom Pendreigh jnr had a good week reaching the quarter finals of the Scottish Rinks Championships at Perth Ice Rink.
