Elgin Ice Rink held its first Royal Caledonian Curling Club Schools Curling competition at The Moray Leisure Centre Ice Rink this week. This competition is especially for those who all attend the same school. The young curlers played a very exciting and good game when Lossiemouth High School took on Elgin High School and played out 6 ends to a small but interested group of spectator’s.
The game was played on good fast ice and the competition was very competitive. The first end saw Elgin High take a 2 with help from a very nice draw shot from Skip Callum Jackson. The second end was keen and Lossie High pulled back a one with an equally good draw by opposing Skip Ross McCulloch. Impressive shots were seen from Ryan Johnson (Lead) Elgin High and at times Frazer Bushell (Lead) Lossie High was struggling with his weight.
However by the 4th end the teams were close with Elgin High just edging a three/two lead.
The fifth end saw a dramatic change in fortunes as Lossie High players delivered consistent shots into the house and both Scott Anderson (Second) and Lyall Pirie (Three) outplayed their Elgin High opponents Keiran Barron (Second) and Sean Barron (Three). A double miss by Elgin High skip gave a five to Lossie High.
An extremely tight last end ensued with Elgin High playing really good shots but could only take a two in the sixth end to give a final score of 7:5 to Lossie High.
Well done both teams and we look forward to next week’s game where Forres Academy take on Elgin High in what would seem to be a real challenge match.
Once the round robin competitions have been completed the winning rink will play in the finals at Murrayfield Ice Rink, Edinburgh during weekend of 16 – 18 March
