Asher wins open knockout.
In the all Nairn Curling Club final of the Moray Province Open Knockout,Ali Asher’s rink of Alan Scott, Robbie Cope and Ross Cope defeated Dean Clark 6-2. The first 4 ends were cagey and tight with single shots traded leaving the rinks tied at 2-2.
In the second half, however, the experienced Asher, taking a break from selling pies,pulled away with double steals in the next 2 ends to record a clear victory.
In the Moray East Province League Division 1, Donald Ross’s Sunninghill team, with 5 single shots and a 2 shot penalty, just overcame the unfortunate Andy Cameron 7-6, whilst Kenny Oswald kept up his League leading form with a straightforward 10-4 win over Neil Mustard. 7 shots scored over the 3 middle ends proving too much for the Darnaway gang.
In Division 2, Abby Duncan found himself 5-0 down after 2 ends, but then never lost another shot as the Fochabers four won the next 5 ends for an 8-5 victory. Meanwhile Forres’s Howard Anstruther raced to a 6-0 lead after 4 ends against Elgin Tennis Club. 2 ends later, the teams were tied 6-6 and Howard’s fingernails were taking a serious trimming. Order was restored however with a pickup of 4 in the last end giving the Forres outfit a 10-6 win.
In Division 3, Molly Keen’s high flying Juniors had a battle royal with the Fochabers four of Ronald Christie. 8-7 down going into the last end, Christie picked up the deuce he needed for the closest of wins. Eddie Milne kept his Darnaway rink in line for honours with a 9-5 win. 9-0 up after 4 ends, he managed to open the door for Bob Stewart who won the next three ends but could get no closer than a 4 shot defeat. In the other Division 3 game, Forres’s Charlie Watt jnr led the Rotarians 6-4 going into the last end, but skip Rob Tyson steered his rink to a big count of 6 for his 10-6 win.
