Moray GrassRoots - your Gateway club

Open to humans interested in gaining more curling experience.

Moray GrassRoots Club is a Scottish Curling Gateway club. These clubs help adults of all ages find their feet on the ice and develop them through to league play. Gateway clubs help new curlers build their confidence in both techniques and strategy.

The Moray GrassRoots Club is available to new curlers. Membership is a maximum of two seasons (because the 2020-21 season was cancelled, Moray GrassRoots curlers have an additional season in the club).

As a club, these curlers can register their interest with the Combined League and enroll a team into the Moray Superleague. Every year there's a Gateway Club Championship; a bonspiel where novice curlers play each other. Moray will be hosting the Championship this season on or about the 26th March 2022.

After their time in the club, Moray GrassRoots curlers interested in pursuing curling can join one of the many clubs in the province.

The 2021-22 Season starts on the 14th September 2021. The Moray GrassRoots Curling Club meets on Tuesdays between 5:30-6:30 pm.

Bring-a-Friend Club Nights

Curlers are the best advocates. We are the best recruiters. Our love and joy for the sport is infectious.

And now, you can host all the friends and colleagues who have ever said "I'd like to try that" to do exactly that... Try Curling! All for a fiver!

Coaches are on hand at these taster sessions to explain and assist with the basic skills and techniques. It's okay to get a bit competitive. Before the session is out, guests will join in a fun, short game.

Hopefully, our friends and families will find as much joy and fulfillment from curling as we do and they will sign up for more TryCurling sessions - and eventually join our clubs.

Corporate Curling

The MPCDG has drafted letters to raise awareness of our Corporate Curling events.

Corporate Curling is an ongoing initiative to engage with local businesses and encourage these to consider curling for their team building activities. Unlike some other sports, curling is accessible to all, no matter age or ability.

Qualified coaches are always on hand to get you guests started with the basic skills and techniques. The sessions are all about having fun. And what's more fun than a game of curling? Before the session is out, guests compete in a wee game... it can get competitive but it's always friendly.

Corporate Curling sessions run in tandem with the regular curling season; ice sheets are only available Monday-Wednesday. Presently, the dedicated corporate sessions are hosted on the first Tuesday of the month. Cost per person for these sessions is £5.

Curling's Cool

The Curling’s Cool programme has been designed for children aged 10 to 11 years but has been successfully adapted to older children. To date, two secondary schools have also used the programme for pupils doing core PE.

There are two plans available to schools. Both plans cover the same skills and always end with a short game.

Plan 1: One-hour sessions at the same time and day for four weeks.

Plan 2: One session, lasting in the region of 3.5 to 4 hours, preferably on a Wednesday morning.

At the end of the season, the MPCDG host a competition with primary schools who have participated throughout the season.

Funding Updates

Throughout lockdowns and uncertainties, Sandra McIver has been applying for funding on behalf of the Development Group.

The MPCDG are pleased to announce the application for funding from the Baillie Gifford Foundation was successful.

The monies received bought four floor curling kits which are being used:

  • for Curling’s Cool sessions in primary schools (currently Anderson’s and Pilmuir Primaries in Forres and Dallas Primary).
  • by Moray Active Schools in the east end of the county, mainly Speyside area.
  • by Bill Jaffrey and Sandra in Forres Community Centre during the Summer Holiday Sports Hub.

The application for funding from Foundation Scotland Clubs in Crisis Fund was also successful.

The £2021 is being used to subsidise Curling’s Cool ice fees.

This funding benefits both our schools and the Moray Leisure Centre ice rink.
